With the release of Whatsapp for iOS v2.12.17, all iOS users can now format their Whatsapp chat to their heart’s content.
The new version includes the ability to make text bold, make it italic, or even strike through it.
Here’s how you use these features:
1. To make text bold: insert an asterisk at the beginning and end of the text.
Eg: *turn this text bold*
2. To italicise the text: insert an underscore at the beginning and end of the text.
Eg: _turn this text into italics_
3. To strikethrough a text: insert tildes (~) at the beginning and end of the text.
Eg: ~strikethrough this text~
NOTE: You can use these shortcuts independently or together. So, using *_~ before and after a text will turn the text bold, italics and run a line through it simultaneously.
For example: ~_*sample text*_~ will be displayed as sample text
Whatsapp had already rolled out these features to the Android platform almost a month ago. However, that release was limited to those who had signed up to use the beta versions on Google Play.
Whatsapp has since been rolling out the updates in batches to the general Android community. This means that some users get the updates before others. That’s typical Android behaviour.
iOS, on the other hand, releases the updates to everyone at a single time. So anyone who is using an iOS device is eligible to upgrade right now.
Go ahead then, log onto the AppStore right now and download the latest update. We hope you have fun using these features. At least now your emphasis will not be lost in the banality of regular style of texting.
