Attention all Windows users! If you still run QuickTime on your PC, it is recommended that you uninstall it now!!
According to a security firm called Trend Micro, Apple will “no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it.” No security updates means that your PC will be left open to all sorts of internet attacks.
Don’t want to take our word for it? How about you the US Department of Homeland Security? Would you take them more seriously?
In an online press release, the United States’ Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has warned of the potential risk: “Exploitation of QuickTime for Windows vulnerabilities could allow remote attackers to take control of affected systems.”
You know shit just got real when the DoHS is directly involved!
So go ahead and uninstall QuickTime right now!
If you’re unable to do it or want to help some friend/relative who’s unable to do it, here’s an easy “how-to” guide from Apple on uninstalling the programme.
Of course, the native QuickTime uninstaller on Windows still works. Or you can go the classic Windows way and find the application in the Uninstall/Repair list under Control Panel and wipe the app clean!
Apple is yet to make a public comment on the issue, but we don’t think it’s prudent to wait for them at all. Trend Micro has already found two instances of code that could potentially be a death-trap for your PC. So it’s absolutely clear there’s a security threat that needs immediate attention.
NOTE: This problem is for the PC users only. All the Mac users are safe from the threat.
