Although a little late to the party, Apple Maps in India has finally got the turn-by-turn directions update. However, only the Apple lovers in the metropolitan cities are getting access to this new feature, at least for now.
Apple Maps didn’t have turn-by-turn directions to any place in the country before this. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, and Delhi are the first ones to get this feature in an attempt to improve GPS navigation and booking cabs (such as Uber and Ola) from within the app. Other key cities will also gain this feature in the near future.
However, even with these additions to Apple Maps, iPhone users in India are more likely to continue using Google Maps. The latter is much better in terms of the expansive coverage of tier 1, 2, and 3 cities in the country. It also has various modes of transportation like driving, walking, and public transport modes apart from also providing real-time traffic status.
There’s still a lot of catching up to do for Apple Maps in India. It has to be made available throughout the country, not just key cities, and more useful features like that of its competitor, Google Maps, has to be added. But for those who don’t mind the quality of data, they can use Apple Maps for its prettier, cleaner and ad-free user interface. Because, if nothing else, it’s hard to beat the class that Apple brings to things, even if it forgets to make it practical or user-friendly.
