Apple has decided to get rid of the iPhone Slide to Unlock feature!
There really wasn’t a better way to ease you into the news, so I decided to skip the introduction and come straight to the point.
It’s time to bid the Slide to Unlock feature adieu!
If you’ve been using any model of the iPhone after the 5s, you will have noticed that you’re no longer using the slide to unlock anyway. Over the past couple of iterations of the phone, a majority of users have shifted to using the inbuilt Touch ID to unlock their phone.
It’s simple, it’s safe, and more importantly, it’s one step less. A lot of us feel that using the Touch ID is just faster. And we’re probably right.
Of all the original iOS features, the Slide to Unlock is probably the most iconic. I still remember Steve Jobs standing on the stage and announcing this feature. Even then I couldn’t help but marvel at the simplicity, yet ingenuity, of the feature.
Since that launch, where slide to unlock was received with much cheering and clapping, this feature has been a regular in all the subsequent versions of the iOS. It has become the one defining feature for all iOS devices, be it the iPhone, the iPad or the iPod Touch.
However, with changing times, Apple is willing to sacrifice its most recognizable feature. Their reasoning? What’s the point of retaining a feature no one uses anyway? Is it just for nostalgia? That’s not Apple’s style. They are all about minimalistic design and simplicity of use. So obviously, the slide to unlock had to go.
All that makes me wonder is how long it will be before the Touch ID goes? And when it does, what new wizardry will replace it? Proximity sensor picking up your hearbeat? Infrared monitors? I don’t know…But I want to know. And when that happens, it will just be as ground breaking as the Touch ID.
Speaking of ground breaking, how many earth-shattering events can we take in a week? First, the UK says goodbye to EU, and then Apple says goodbye to Slide to Unlock!
You know what? Screw the Brexit!!. This is more life changing. No, seriously. The UK will regret this decision, apologise to the people, hold another referendum and get right back into the EU. The Slide to Unlock, on the other hand, is gone for good. There’s no coming back from that.
*heart broken into a million pieces*
