It was a typical day at his usual job predicting weather when BBC Weather meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker ran into an embarrassing situation. It seems our paranoia might be justified when it comes to AI technology, as this weatherman experienced on live TV.
He’d just been describing the snowfall places like Minneapolis and Denver would be facing when the Siri on his Apple Watch suddenly chimed up, saying, “There’s no snow in the forecast.”
“Oh, dear,” was his very British response. Apple Watch users can probably relate! I’ve had my Apple Watch Siri butt in on my conversations numerous times, though thankfully, they’ve mostly been the general “Sorry, I couldn’t get that.”
This hilarious goof-up probably happened because Schafernaker mistakenly pressed the Digital Crown of his watch or he may have had the ‘Raise to Speak’ setting on. Nevertheless, it’s spooky enough with all the discourse going on about privacy and how Alexa and Siri are always listening.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m just gonna go put on another episode of Black Mirror to fuel my paranoia of AI-enabled technology.
