Samsung’s new flagship smartphone (Galaxy S8) is scheduled to launch in India on April 19, and its inevitable comparisons with iPhone 7 have already started. S8 clearly trumps the iPhone 7 in specifications but how much does that translate into real world performance? Let’s find out.
Advantage Samsung
Galaxy S8 has a big advantage of being six months younger than the iPhone 7. As a result, its specifications are newer and better. It comes with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor, which leaves iPhone 7’s A10 chip in dust. Early benchmark tests have given S8 a cumulative score of 205,248, while iPhone 7 managed just 181,807 points. Impressive, isn’t it?
Apple Fights Back
Although Apple can’t win the specs war with Samsung’s new smartphone, it has another trick up its sleeve. A real tech expert will always tell you that on-paper specs and real-world performance are two very different things. No matter how good a hardware setup you build, the software has to be capable enough to utilise it. This is where Apple excels. The tight hardware-software integration of Apple products helps maximise the performance.
The Showdown
Now then! Samsung has specs, and Apple has the product control. What matters more? Who will win the showdown? See for yourself …
The Surprise Winner
Spoiler alert: If you haven’t seen the above video yet then don’t blame us for spoiling the suspense.
Even though we were cheering for iPhone 7 all along, we didn’t expect it to inch past the Galaxy S8. It’s amazing how misleading the specifications can be! People will still buy the S8 assuming that better specs mean better performance and you can’t blame them. The truth, as we have seen, is something else.
Wasn’t Even An Equal Fight
Samsung fanboys will argue that the fight was too close to declare iPhone 7 the winner. Unless you put both phones side-by-side, it’s almost impossible to tell which performs better. It’s a fair point, but a fragile defence considering that we are comparing the new Samsung phone with the old iPhone.
iPhone 7 isn’t even meant to compete with Galaxy S8. Its real challenger was the Galaxy Note 7, and it absolutely destroyed it in the speed tests. Samsung shouldn’t be happy that it ran iPhone 7 so close, it should be worried what would happen when iPhone 8 launches in few months.
Same Old Story
We feel sorry for Samsung. We really do! They had a terrible 2016 with Galaxy Note 7 proving to be a complete disaster. They are now counting on S8 to reverse the fortunes but seeing comparatives like these must not be giving them much confidence.
Having said that, Samsung has only themselves to blame. They need to find a way to up their game if they wish to steal iPhone’s crown. Last year also, iPhone 6S beat Note 7 in speed test, and now the story is repeating itself. How can you claim your new model is the best when competitors old model is better?
