I still remember the day Apple unveiled its futuristic iPhone X and all I could think of was how this phone might be the last smartphone to matter at all. And while we were busy admiring the Apple of our eye, the iPhone X, Samsung was busy hatching a plot to rip Apple’s too cool to handle features once again!
Before you say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, allow me to remind you how Samsung has been imitating Apple for years now.

Our beloved iPhone X bagged the title of “the smartphone of future”, and in the hopes of hogging some limelight, Samsung decided to copy iPhone X’s widely loved features using its latest AI processing chip, Exynos 9 Series 9810 in its upcoming Galaxy S model. The chip is a CES 2018 Innovation Awards Honoree, and Samsung claims that Exynos 9810 is “the industry’s most advanced 10nm process technology.”
The new chip will offer “realistic face-tracking filters as well as stronger security when unlocking a device with one’s face.” Which means the Korean manufacturer is promising features such as Face ID and Animojis in its new phones.
Is it me or do the features look suspiciously similar to the ones in … oh I don’t know … iPhone X maybe?
To be fair, Samsung did beat Apple when it introduced facial recognition in Galaxy S8. But compared to Apple’s widely praised Face ID feature on the new iPhone X, Samsung’s initial attempt with the face ID was quite disappointing, considering you could unlock the device with a still image of the owner. So much for security!
But the Korean tech Giant seems to be learning from its mistake. The Exynos 9 Series 9810, to give it its full title, will form the heart of the upcoming Galaxy S9. Built using Samsung’s second-generation 10nm process technology, the Exynos 9810 has an eight-core CPU for smoother multitasking and app switching and promises to be extremely energy-efficient.
According to Samsung, the chip will have a separate secure processing unit for handling sensitive personal and biometric data such as facial, iris, and fingerprint scans. It also features image processing enhanced by deep learning, which will enable the new cameras to recognize and categorize faces accurately. Who knows, we might be looking at the brains of next FaceID competitor.
The company also boasts of promising “real-time out-of-focus photography,” up to 120fps video recording at Ultra HD resolution, superior video and better still image stabilization. Needless to say, photography will be high resolution and reduce background noise. Portrait mode, anyone? Also, with the new image processing capabilities comes the possibility of rendering approx. 1.07 billion colors, which translates to a more vibrant display.
Samsung is rumored to unveil the Galaxy S9 in February 2018. While there isn’t much to speculate about the new flagship phone, this new chip ensures that Samsung has its eyes on the prize — a new futuristic device that can beat the iPhone X.
