With a new iPhone unlikely to launch before the last quarter of 2019, the rumours about its features are surfacing way earlier than usual – even by Apple’s standards. And the specs include a long list of features, including an additional camera lens, a more efficient Face ID, and USB-C. But the birds are also buzzing about the move to WiFi 6, a substantial upgrade from the current WiFi 5.
WiFi 6 and Why We Want It
For one, it’s almost 30% faster than the current version, and, considering that there are very few things we like more than our WiFi, we’re over the moon, even if it’s just a rumour. In addition to being faster, it also allows for more devices in the same area to have a WiFi connection simultaneously. It also runs on 2.4 GHz band, as opposed to WiFi 5 which only works in the 1 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
But there is one thing standing between you and the fabulousness of WiFi 6. The WiFi Alliance (A non-profit organization that promotes Wi-Fi technology and certifies Wi-Fi products for conformity to certain standards of interoperability) hasn’t yet approved of this new version. But hopefully, that’ll happen before the new iPhone launches in the fall. Another thing that the Alliance is thinking of moving on is the names of the WiFi standards. Since 802.11ax is being commonly referred to as WiFi 6, they’re thinking of renaming 802.11ac as WiFi 5 to provide patrons with an easy way to remember the different standards.
If these predictions are true, Apple lovers everywhere have quite a few things to look forward to in the 2019 iPhone update. And the new WiFi will surely be among the top 3 most wanted feature in everyone’s list. Now, all we ask is give it to us fast coz our fingers are itching, Apple!
