WWDC 2017 finally brought to us some much awaited Mac updates. And while the specs are spectacular (sorry for the pun), the real head turner at the event was an all new iMac Pro! Let’s catch up on all that Apple shared with the world last night.
iMac
- Display:
Because 4K and 5K were not clear enough, Apple went ahead and improved the displays even more! Now they are 43% brighter, and support up to 1 billion colours! - Speed:
The new Mac updates contain a serious boost to speed. The inclusion of a faster processor 7th Gen Intel “Kaby Lake”), coupled with the option of having 32 GB or 64 GB of RAM, makes these devices extremely fast. Not to mention the Fusion Drive that comes standard on all new iMacs! - Connectivity:
Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports have been made standard on all iMac. Each of them is capable of upto 40Gb/s speeds. Apart from that, the usual four USB 3 ports, SD card reader, and wireless connectivity options remain unchanged. - Next-Gen Graphics:
Apple says one of the biggest Mac updates is the ability of these machines to handle serious graphics. Powered by a new Intel Iris Plus graphic processor, Apple claims the iMacs are capable of delivering up to 80% faster graphics. Apple also declared that all this firepower had been added to make the iMacs optimised for Virtual Reality (VR).
A final piece of good news is that price of the mid-range iMac has been dropped. In the US, the reduction is by about $300, and we’re not sure how it’ll translate to India.
A note on MacBook Pros
The MacBook Pro lineup has also received more or less the same Mac updates, so we’re leaving those out here. You can visit Apple’s website to find out the changes in more detail.
And now for the big ticket item!
The All new iMac Pro
Apple merely gave a sneak peak of the product, which will be available by the end of the year. Because they didn’t go into much detail themselves, we are unable to give you any juicy titbits either. However, Apple did call it the “best Mac ever made”!
Here’s a quick run-down of what the new device entails.
- Will come in a gorgeous Space Grey colour. Wow!
- 5K will come standard. Duh!
- 80% increase in cooling capacity. Cool!
- 8-Core Xeon Processor will come standard, with an option of expanding up to and 10-Cores and 18-cores. Wha-!!
- Radeon Vega graphics processor will fire the graphics on the system, which will come with 16 GB of dedicated VRAM. Epic!
- iMac Pro will be capable of performing up to 22 Teraflops per second. Holy cow!
- You’ll have an option of upgrading to up to 128 GB of memory and 4TB of SSD. Amaze!
- Will hit the markets in December 2017, pegged at for $4,999 for the base model. Which will be at least 3 and a half lakhs in India. For the base model. LOL, aukaat!
I don’t know about you, but I am totally freaking out about this new iMac. It’s nearly three past midnight as I am writing this, and yet sleep is the last thing on my mind. I want more and more of this new iMac Pro!! Can’t wait for a time when it’ll come to India and I will be able to lay my hands on one these at least at the Apple Store, if not actually own one.
