Rumour has it that Apple is likely to dole out a newer (read: cheaper) version of its MacBook Air this year. Given that there has been no substantial upgrade over the past three years, this can be touted as great news for MacBook lovers and tech enthusiasts around the world.
The current model of MacBook Air is, in all honesty, outdated. The processor core itself is a 5th generation Intel i5 and i7, while most other notebooks currently stand at Intel i8. The current 13-inch model was upgraded from the earlier 11-inch model which has now been completely discontinued. The most recent upgrade was done on the base processor chip in 2014-2015 when it was upgraded to a Broadwell chip. Since then, there has been a drastic cutback on its upgrades. However, on the upside, the current model does have the advantage of being travel-friendly with its tactile feel.
The Kind of Upgrades to Expect from the Next Model
Apart from carrying a lower price tag, the new model could very well have several internal upgrades like a bump in the processor and graphics. Even the current 1440 x 900 retina display could be upgraded to a better form. Also, the current design, which is very outdated given its age, could see an overall reformation. It could also see some USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 upgrades.
There’s also a rumour revolving around a possible new keyboard, which could be crumb-resistant as well as spill-proof. It could also include a keycap, a substrate, and a guard structure extending from the keycap that directs dust and dirt away.
When to Expect the Launch of the New Model
The new model of MacBook Air is expected to be launched either around March or during the second quarter of this year. It will most likely take place at Apple’s surprise education event on March 27 at the Lane Tech College Prep High School in Chicago, or the WWDC event in June.
Investors and tech geeks should keep an eye out for a more affordable and efficient MacBook Air. Whatever be the case, the current model is surely set to be replaced with something faster, stronger, and better.
