Apple’s plans to manufacture iPhones in India suffered a major setback when the Indian government announced that it will not give Tim Cook’s company any tax benefits here. In spite of that, Apple has decided to go ahead with the manufacturing.

    AppleInsider reports

“Apple’s Indian manufacturing will finally begin within the next 4 to 6 weeks at a Wistron plant in Bangalore — and more ambitious plans are already being hatched.”

This is an ambitious and bold move from Tim Cook and shows just how serious he is about gaining the Indian business. Not having any tax benefits would mean that iPhones in India would not sell as cheaply as we had previously hoped.

Having said that, manufacturing iPhones (and other Apple products) right here would certainly bring down their prices from the current range.

A government official informed the Wall Streer Journal that Apple is prepped and ready for the process to start manufacturing iPhones in India.

“Almost all preparations have been done for launching Apple’s first phase project in Bangalore through Wistron.”

It is still unclear which one of the iPhones Apple will start manufacturing at Bengaluru. Most of the sources seem to point towards iPhone SE. However, CultofMac has reported that Apple is likely to begin with the manufacture of iPhone 6 and 6s.

“The manufacturer that will be responsible for the initial manufacturing work is Wistron Corp, which will supposedly begin building iPhone 6 and 6s models at its plant in Bengaluru.”

Frankly, we prefer the 6 to the SE. However, at this point, we’ll take anything — just as long as it means that Apple actually starts manufacturing iPhones in India
