All aboard the Rumor Train! Whoot – Whoot!
It was just a few days after the launch of iPhone SE and the grapevine was already abuzz with rumors of iPhone 7. But then again, that’s nothing out of the ordinary. If you’ve closely followed the activities of the gossip mill these last few years, such speculations are commonplace.
This year, however, the wagging tongues have outdone themselves. Bored with spreading speculations of what the iPhone 7 will look like, they’ve consulted their crystal ball and churned out some fresh food for thought (and our imagination). They’re now spinning tales of a newer iPhone, the …
iPhone 7s!!
There is furious chatter in the tech world about the latest iPhone (to be launched in 2017) and all the features it is likely to have. Here’s the gist for you:
AMOLED Display
Gossip mongers believe that iPhone 7s will come with an Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED) display. All previous models so far have only used LCD for their screens. With the new AMOLED technology, the display can be improved many times to offer a far better viewing experience. And since they’re power efficient, this new display can also increase your battery life.
Other market leaders like Samsung already offer AMOLED displays in their flagship phones. So it’s good that Apple is looking to do the same. But we’re going to have to wait 18 months for that. Will it be too little, too late?
Curved Display
There’s some chance that one variation of the phone will feature a curved display. Again Apple seems to be following in the footsteps of Samsung. (When will they stop playing catch-up!?)
The Samsung Galaxy Edge, with its curved display, may not have taken the world by storm, but it has received moderate success. Besides, with zero direct competition, Samsung got a free ride to the top of the podium in the curved screen category.
How will Apple’s move affect the market? That we’ll have to wait and see.
Wireless Charging
With iPhone 7s, you just might be able to get rid of the menace of charging cables. Wireless charging will let you juice up your phone simply by placing it on a (compatible) table/desk.
The technology is not new. In fact, Samsung has been offering this feature for well over a year now. Come on Apple, catch up, catch up, please! (Why do I feel like I have written this already? Deja vu? Are we in the Matrix?)
Redesigned Exterior
Apple is also likely to remake the exterior of the iPhone 7s. It’s going to be curved and feature an all new fully glass unibody. The change in the form factor is supposed to give the phone a more ergonomic design and reduce drop-rates for people with smaller hands.
It’s also possible that the phone will see the re-emergence of metal stripes around the edges, like the one in iPhone 5s or SE.
Who is telling us all this?
These speculations come from a famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who works for KGI Securities. Mr. Kuo has a history of producing authentic analysis and predictions. That’s why we are willing to believe at least some of them.
However, as you may have noticed, the design changes are way too many for an “s” cycle of the phone. Convention dictates that the “s” models usually receive minor upgrades. The emphasis is on improving internal hardware and fixing bugs from the previous models. It’s only the following iterations (the numbered models – you know, iPhone 4, 5, and 6) that get a significant upgrade.
This contradiction has made us a bit skeptical of how true these rumors could be. One thing is for certain, though. The iPhone 7s is too far into the future to be a matter of any serious deliberation right now.
For all we know, Apple might not even have decided on a designer yet, much less the design! Let’s focus our energy on a more imminent model that’s due later this year. Catch up on Everything We Know So Far About iPhone 7.
