With the launch of iPhone 7 earlier this month, Apple announced that they would be discontinuing 5s, 6, and 6 Plus – the three older models. This was meant for only select countries and India was not one of them. However, recent developments point that Apple India might also be following suit.
Apple has removed iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus from the India website as well.
We are a bit stumped at this new development. There was absolutely no indication that something like this was going to happen on the Indian front. To add to the confusion, Apple India has denied discontinuing these models according to this article in ET.
Apple says that they’ve removed the three iPhones from the Indian website to bring it at par with the websites of all the other countries. They’ll continue selling these older models through their retail chains.
How long will Apple continue to sell the old iPhones?
We’re not sure if this is an “offer valid till stocks last” kind of offer. Will Apple India sell the older iPhones for as long as they have pieces left? Or will they actually keep the phones under production for the Indian market specifically?
While it seems highly unlikely that Apple would go through the trouble of making the phones only to be sold here, we cannot discount the fact that the iPhone 5s has been Apple’s most successful iPhone in India. So successful, in fact, that it accounts for more than 50% of all iPhones sold in India so far.
So, what are our choices again?
Irrespective of how long Apple plans to continue selling the older iPhones in India, one thing’s for sure: Indians can choose from a wide range of iPhones.
When the latest iPhone hits the Indian shores, we will have 8 iPhones to choose from!
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s and iPhone SE!
Not only that, the last two iPhones — 6s and 6s Plus — will now be available with the bumped up storage options of 32 GB and 128 GB, instead of their older 16 GB and 64 GB versions.
Note: The new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are also starting from 32 GB, and will be available in India starting from Rs 60,000 onwards, starting October 7th.
