There are times when you need to know which iPad model you have, or more precisely, which generation. Imagine being on the phone with Apple service centre and trying to explain it to them that you have the big iPad and it’s rose gold in colour. So, for your benefit, you should know the exact model of your Apple device. And in this article, we will tell you how you can do that.
Even though it is a bit tricky to find out the generation of your iPad, you don’t have to be an Apple Store genius to figure it out, but you do have to know where to look.
Here’s how you can find the model number of your iPad
In addition to the cool marketing names that iPads have, they are also given a couple of specific model numbers. The first one you can find on your device itself. All you have to do is flip it over and see the number among some other tiny writings.
The first model number
At the end of the row on the top, you’ll see the word ’model’ followed by ‘A’ and four digits which is one of the model numbers. The numbers identify what screen size and generation your iPad is and if it’s cellular-equipped.
Here’s a chart to help you understand what it all means:

Additionally, there are some cellular-equipped 4th gen iPads and first-gen iPad minis that have an ‘MM’ version that indicates that it has CDMA compatibility. Though you can find this designation only on a spec sheet. If you use these iPads on Verizon’s network, it is the MM version that you’ve got in all probability.
The second model number
The second model number, which is an internal SKU number, can be found in ‘Settings’. Tap on the General button, then About and you’ll see a Model tab that lists a number which is different from the one found on the rear of your device. This one is a precise identifier that provides details about the capacity of your device and the country as well as the type of iPad you have.
More than anything, the second model number comes in handy if you want to sell your device online, but otherwise, you can make do with the one on the back of your iPad.
