Instagram is a huge success among the millennials, and we can see the influence it has over this generation. But it does come with its own share of shortcomings that are subject to abuse by users. That’s why the photo-sharing app’s new update is a welcome change, since it brings in a host of security features.
As you may know, pictures posted to your Instagram profile can be seen by anyone and everyone. They can also leave comments on your pictures unless you change the settings and make your account private. The comments section – which was meant to be a place to leave compliments – has turned into a place where people share uncomplimentary thoughts, post abusive remarks, and vent negativity with abandon.
Expectedly, there’s been a public outcry against this ugly turn of events. People have even shut down their accounts because they felt badly victimised by the offensive comments they received. To counter this distressing trend, Instagram has taken drastic measures, which are far reaching and strong enough to keep predators at bay.
Way back in September, Instagram launched keyword-based comment moderation. There was a limit to the words that were allowed and any word being used would come from a pool of keywords. This has gone a long way to check the hawks that are out to harass and intimidate innocent Instagram users.
As a follow-up, Instagram has now announced that users will be able to turn off comments on any post. This service is currently available only on a few accounts; but it will become globally available for all users in the next couple of weeks. All they need to do is go to the advanced settings section and turn off all comments before posting pictures.
Going further, users on private accounts can now remove followers from their accounts if they look suspicious. Also, users can report any offensive comments anonymously. Mischief makers, if found guilty of harassment, will be dealt with as per the local law.
It’s great to see Instagram taking user privacy so seriously. In this age of the internet, one cannot be too careful. We highly recommend all our users — be on iOS or Android — to immediately upgrade their apps to the latest version.
Stay safe!
