Instagram’a mobile website has just received a welcome update. You can now post photos to your Instagram feed directly from a browser, without having to download the app.
It’s possible that Instagram has done this with special attention to countries such as India, where a majority of the userbase is still on primitive, slow 2G/3G networks. As pointed out by 9to5Mac —
“[…] the move is intended to make sharing to Instagram easier in markets with slow network speeds by eliminating the need to download the Instagram app.”
This update to the Instagram mobile website is especially useful for iPad users.
So far, iPad users have had a terrible time using Instagram on their devices. For one, there is no dedicated iPad Instagram app. Users had to contend with downloading the iPhone version of the app, which was not at all optimised for the bigger screen. And secondly, the Instagram mobile website was gravely lacking in features, not the least of which was the inability to share photos directly.
However, with the Instagram mobile website update, iPad users have a good reason to celebrate. They can finally share their pics on the go, without having to worry about dealing with a crappy user interface. Now, all we need is a version of the Instagram app developed specifically to utilise the extra screen real-estate of the bigger devices.
Meanwhile, we are happy to make do with the Instagram mobile website. Which, incidentally, can also be used as a pseudo-app on your iPad. Here’s how to do it:
“You can also save the Instagram web app to your Home screen (which presents it separately in multitasking and Spotlight search) by tapping the share icon from Safari and selecting the ‘Add to Home’ option from the share sheet.”
