You know those genius hackers you see in the movies, the guys who save the world with their technical wizardry? Well, developer Steve Troughton-Smith is one such benevolent soul. Mr. Smith has found a hidden keyboard in the iOS code.
Smith was fooling around with an iOS Simulator when he found a hidden code for a special keyboard. It’s the code for a one-handed keyboard, the likes of which can be found in any number of third-party keyboard apps.
As can be seen in this screenshot provided by Gizmodo, the keyboard pushes the keys to one side of the screen so that you can touch all the letters with just one hand. The left side of the screen has been left free for frequent editing options like Cut, Copy, and Paste.
Steve is of the opinion that the keyboard has been lurking within the iOS code “since at least iOS 8.”
That claim makes a lot of sense because that iOS was considered to be the “biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the App Store”.
The developer explains further that although the code is present within the iOS framework, Apple has not made the feature accessible to general users. Taking into account the recent keyboard war that’s being waged on the iOS platform, it’s a wonder why Apple hasn’t made this feature public.
If you want to use this keyboard, you’ll have to jailbreak your device. While it certainly can be a very useful feature, the risk might not be worth it. So we suggest you wait for Apple to announce it officially, which might be sooner than anticipated now that it has become public knowledge.
