Hey Siri, I have a question for Team Applesutra

Thank You We’ll get back to you faster that you can say iPhone 12 Pro Max!

How to Downgrade from iOS 10 to iOS 9

    Spread the word

The iOS 10 public beta is out. If you’ve installed it on your iPhone (especially 5 or 5s) and are now regretting your decision (we warned you, didn’t we?), here’s a guide on how to downgrade from iOS 10 to iOS 9.

Download the Downgrade File (firmware for iOS 9.3.2)

Download the Downgrade File to a system that you want to use for this process. Preferably a Mac, but Windows PC will work too. Make sure you have the latest iTunes installed on it, though. This file will help you with downgrading your device to iOS 9.3.2.

Please note that each iOS device has a unique firmware file. Therefore, make sure you download the right one from the options below —

Caution: The above links will lead to you a page that has a list of all the iPhone/iPad/iPod models listed. Find your exact model and download the correct file corresponding to your device. DO NOT download any other file as it can potentially brick your device.

    Renaming the file

Depending on the browser you’re using to download the file, it will be downloaded in a different format. Mostly it will be a *.ipsw file. In case it’s a *.zip or *.rar file (which happens when you download using Safari), simply rename the file to *.ipsw

Booting in Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU)

Relax, it’s way easier than it sounds. Here’s what you do:

    1. Connect your device to a Mac/PC with the latest version of iTunes. Wait for iTunes to recognise your device.
    2. Keeping the device plugged in, turn off the device.
    3. Press and Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
    4. Without releasing the Power button, press and hold the Home button.
    5. Continue holding the two together for another 10 seconds.
    6. Now release only the Power button and continue to hold the Home button.
    7. Click OK to proceed to the next screen.
    8. Hold down the Option key for Mac/Shift key for Windows and click on the “Restore iPhone” button.
    9. A browser window will open asking you to select the restore file. Navigate to the file you downloaded in step 1 and select it.
    10. A warning screen will open up asking if you’re sure if you want to do this! Of course, you are! So click “Restore and Update”. In the following screens, click Next, then click Agree.
    11. Wait for the install to finish. You should be greeted with the welcome screen once it’s done.
