Yesterday (April 1, 2016) Apple turned 40! And they marked this special day by flying a pirate flag over their campus at 1 Infinite Loop.
Why the Pirate Flag?
There was a time when Apple considered itself as an outsider to the tech industry. Even in their earliest days, Apple wanted to change how people looked at personal computers. They wanted to “capture” people’s imaginations, so to speak, and they eventually did. Hence the pirate flag!
Apple does have a habit of changing the flags at its HQ very often. Sometimes they do it support a cause (like the LGBT movement) and sometimes to mark a special event (like this 40th birthday).
It’s heartening to see Apple openly acknowledging its past, since Steve Jobs was very firm about not turning the pages of those chapters of history. We understand why; those times were particularly painful for him. Under Cook, however, Apple seems a bit more tolerant to its past, embracing it even!
Other Celebrations
At the end of the work day, everybody at Apple gathered in from of their office building and had a traditional beer bash a.k.a a keg party. Basically, all you’re allowed to drink is beer, and there’s no limit to how much you can drink. In fact, there’s an unwritten rule that says you can’t leave the party until you’re drunk.
Wow, that’s some responsible citizenry right there!
The event also saw Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe spin out some tunes. Whoa! So jealous right now, Apple. So… very… jealous!!!
Apple kickstarted its anniversary celebrations two weeks back at the March 21st event, where it showed a short video encompassing the entire history of Apple. It was aptly named “40 years in 40 seconds.”

40 years! That’s a long time!
If Apple were a person, it would be going through a mid-life crisis right about now. But thank god Apple is not a person! It’s a dynamic company, and so, instead of lying curled up in a basement somewhere, wallowing in self-pity, it’s just off of a bout with the US government. And we all know who landed the last punch!
