Apple just released to developers a preview of its new connector pin, and obviously, it’s incompatible with every existing product.
The new connector pin will be called ‘Ultra Accessory Connector’ (UAC).
Here’s what the new connector pin will look like:
- The new pin will be 2.05mm by 4.85mm.
- It’s going to be an 8-pin connector.
- In terms of thickness, it’s only a fraction thinner than USB-C.
- It’ll be half as wide as the USB-C or the standard Lightning port on iPhones currently.
- It’s not clear why Apple is deciding to move to a new connector pin.
- It’s also not clear how soon this will start appearing on Apple devices.
Apple announced the new connector pin through its official Made-for-iPhone (MFi) licensing program.
“The UAC will allow accessory makers to save space inside their designs versus using an Apple Lightning port or USB-C, which are similar in size to one another.”
The dilemma we’re all facing right now:
No, it won’t connect to any of the existing devices.
Yes, we know, it doesn’t make any sense.
No, we don’t know why Apple is doing it.
Yes, you’ll have to buy one dozen new connectors.
No, we don’t like it either.
