It seems like we’ve been waiting forever, but we’re finally closer to having “Apple Glass” become a reality! Famous leaker Jon Prosser recently released a video with all the details on a huge Apple glasses leak that has got us pretty excited. (Unlike Apple, which probably hates everything about this situation.)
Well, however Apple might feel about it, we’ve got all the Apple AR glasses news you need to catch up on right now.
Apple Glasses Concept
We finally have an (unofficial!) name to put to the Apple AR glasses we’ve been expecting and speculating over for years! And although it might be underwhelming, the much-awaited AR glasses by Apple are called… *drum rolls* … Apple Glass.
Well, naming aside, Prosser revealed that the glasses will wirelessly connect to your iPhone (much like the Apple Watch) and all the processing would happen on the iPhone. So don’t go expecting any futuristic Tony Stark-esque piece of tech! According to Prosser, the prototype had plastic frames, which may change later, and a LiDAR scanner on the right temple of the glasses similar to the one on the 2020 iPad Pro, but no cameras. He also said that the frames come with a plastic stand for wirelessly charging the glasses.
As for what the glasses themselves offer, Prosser said that both the lenses on the glasses display information using a UI called “Starboard”, with gestures on and in front of the glasses controlling this information. He also said that the glasses have a lot to do with “proprietary Apple QR codes”, which we assume means that some part of the UI relies on scanning codes in order to work.
Another aspect of the design is that the device shows information only to the wearer and looks like ordinary glasses on the outside. One sad news is that apparently the first-gen of the product, at least, does not seem to support the sunglass’ tinted lenses.
Apple Glasses Pricing and Release
Now, let’s get to the part that might make or break the deal for many of us broke Apple fans. Well, if this Apple glasses leak turns out to be true, we actually have some good news in our future as Prosser leaked that the pricing for Apple Glass starts at approximately ₹38k ($499 to be exact). Not bad!
As for when we might be seeing it—the wait seems to be quite long still. Prosser said that Apple had planned for the Apple Glass to be a “one more thing” kind of announcement to the press, likely in the fourth quarter of 2020 or the first quarter of 2021. We’re also likely going to face a year-long wait before the device is actually in our hands.
Of course, this is all guesswork and leaks have been disproved before; but with Jon Prosser’s track record, we can hope that it’s at least marginally accurate! I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited to see what this new tech brings us. Hopefully, it’ll go better than Google Glass…
