Apple has been considering an upgrade for iTunes content to 4K HDR for quite some time now. And a report on AppleInsider said that several films including ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them’ as well as ‘Passengers’ showed copies of the films as 4K HDR on iTunes. Although, currently, iTunes doesn’t support content in 4K HDR, this update seems to confirm that the introduction of 4K support is only a matter of time.
Once the news of 4K content showing on iTunes was leaked, many Twitter users across the globe, especially from U.K have confirmed that they can see 4K HDR content in their purchased section on the iTunes account. However, most users are still not able to see 4K option at all.
The interesting thing is that when people are buying movies from iTunes, the files are still being downloaded in regular HD as of now since iTunes at present doesn’t support 4K officially, but the file description in the downloads section shows 4K resolution.
Amid the rumours, experts are also saying that the company might be developing an Apple TV 4K model which might be launched later this year. Which makes sense, as Apple would like to have a player support for the new high-resolution content.
There is currently a hardware limitation within Apple TV that prevents it from supporting the 4K resolution with just a software update. So most likely, 4K support will come in the form of a brand new Apple TV model, which might be introduced along with iPhone 8 in the fall.
While the likes of Google, Amazon and Netflix are quite ahead with 4K HDR movies, Apple is falling behind with content in 1080p presently. There is currently a limited availability of 4K content but it is steadily growing. It will be wise move for Apple to have their software and hardware ready before the 4K resolution becomes mainstream.
